Four SPSC Jumpers Honored by Central Division
The annual Central Division Spring Panel Meeting was held on April 18-19 in Eau Claire WI. One of the highlights of each year's meeting is the voting on Divisional Awards. Johnny Lyons was named Skier of the Year, and Karin Friberg was honored as Female Skier of the Year. Two of SPSC's younger skiers were recognized as the Most Improved ... Trevor Edlund among the boys, and Michaela Arneson among the girls. This is an indication of the strength of SPSC's junior development program. Congratulations to these outstanding athletes!   more info ... more pix

Brian Wallace, who's headed for the Junior Olympics in Ishpeming MI next week, warmed up in fine style by flying 52 meters twice on our 46 meter hill during the "Tom Harrington" tournament. This record was previously held only by Johnny Lyons, who'll now have to share the honor with Brian. Johnny Lyons & Karin Friberg Win in Chicago
Two SPSC jumpers took top honors in Class A ski jumping at Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove IL on January 26. Johnny Lyons edged Kyle Lockhart of Norge in the men's division. Both had identical distances of 73 meters, but Lyons scored a slight edge from the judges; his point total was 236.6 to Lockharts' 234.1. Karin Friberg won the women's title with distances of 73 and 68 meters.

On Sunday, Johnny scored another win in the SuperTour class, with distances of 73 and 73.5 meters, while Karin was edged by Nina Lussi of Lake Placid. Nina's distances were 70 and 68.5 meters. Karin had a slight distance edge, with flights of 73 and 71.5, but Nina got slightly higher marks from the judges to win by 3.3 points.

Karin has been selected to travel to Europe for the Junior World Championships in February. However, women are excluded from jumping in the Olympics ... it's the only sport in which the IOC won't let them participate. Annual Holiday Training Camp a Big Success
SPSC's annual Holiday Beginner's Camp was held Dec 27 and 28. Each year we host a large number of youngsters who want to give our sport a try. Below is a report on both days from Patrick Lyons ... results of the mini-tournament held Friday afternoon can be found on our Schedule & Results page, link at left.

We had a great turnout for the first day of our training camp. Had close to twenty five new kids eight years old and younger. We set up those who needed equipment. We tried to slow down those that had their own. Lot of club people doing a lot of different tasks. The camp officially ended at 3:pm but kids skied until 4-4:30. We closed the hill for lunch and when we started the next phase, all the new kids and their parents lined the 30m hill to watch the more experienced skiers jump on a bigger hill. Ryan Johnson, Trevor Edlund, Michaela Arneson, and Elizabeth (Bug) Wallace took about three jumps each to huge applause. The crowd also had the chance to witness Joey Edlund ( age seven ) take his first two jumps off a 30 meter. All in all it was a great day.

Second day was great also. Practiced in the morning, took a break and had lunch, watched 36 skiers paticipate in our annual Christmas Camp Tournament. About 20-25 new kids and some club veterans. Afterwards, we had a good awards ceremony upstairs in the chalet.
