Inducted 1 Nov 1991 Herb Merth was a member of the St. Paul Ski Club from the mid1920s until his sudden death, at the age of 46, in 1957. For more than 30 years Merth participated as a member and leader of the St. Paul Ski Club. The seven terms that Merth served as president of the St. Paul Ski Club were more than any member has served. Presidential plaques, in memory of Herb Merth, note the year of the incoming presidents of the junior and senior clubs. As a competitor, Merth was a top Class “A” contestant throughout the mid1920s. He placed at the top of a number of tournaments at Mounds Park, as well as competitions held throughout the Central Division. Merth became a member of the St. Paul Ski Club Board of Directors, and was elected to the first of his seven terms as president in 1932. He served as an important influence on the Board of Directors for 25 years. His perceptions and leadership were instrumental in many of the advances made during his tenure with the club. Perhaps his most enduring contribution was the establishment of the St. Paul Junior Ski Club. The format introduced by Merth is presently used with few modifications. Herb Merth was a perennial public address announcer at the St. Paul Ski Club tournaments held throughout the 1940’s and 1950’s at Battle Creek Park. His style established new standards of announcing for ski jumping tournaments. His contributions of leadership and initiatives have had a long and lasting affect on the St. Paul Ski Club that will continue to benefit future generations.
